 | | Perceptions and Power: Assessing the Impact of Russia's Influence on Development Cooperation and Attitudes in Africa |
 | As global geopolitics shift, development aid is becoming ever more intertwined with foreign and security policy. Aid does not only influence economic outcomes; it also shapes political preferences, institutional trust, and social attitudes. Yet we know far less about how aid itself responds when new geopolitical actors enter the scene, and what this means for both donors and recipients.
This new EBA report by Maria Perrotta Berlin (SITE) looks at Russia's expanding engagement in Africa and how it may influence both development cooperation and citizens' views. Using an innovative mix of geospatial aid data, public opinion surveys, and conflict mapping, it compares areas with and without Russian (and Wagner-linked) activity - and before/after their arrival.

 | | How Trust, Identity, and Resilience have Evolved in Ukraine Under Pressure |
 | | What shapes social cohesion under extreme pressure - and what sustains resilience during war? On January 19, 2026, the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE) hosted Ukrainian sociologist Tymofii Brik (Kyiv School of Economics), who drew on nearly three decades of survey evidence to trace how trust, identity, and political attitudes in Ukraine have evolved before and during Russia's full-scale invasion. |

 | | Ukraine and Moldova Press Their EU Case as War and Interference Raise the Stakes |
 | | Ukraine and Moldova's push to join the European Union is tied to security, rebuilding economies, and protecting democracy while facing Russian pressure. A new policy brief by Anastasiia Arbuzova and Anders Olofsgård, based off last year's SITE Development Day, discusses what's helping the two countries move forward and what could still derail them. |
